Visit from Dr. Niamh Shaw!
We were extremely lucky to be joined by Dr. Niamh Shaw today to speak to us about her love of science, space and her journey to Antartica.
She visited 3rd to 6th class. Niamh told us about her background including growing up in Dundalk! She spoke about her mission in Botswana which was practise for going to space. She showed us the food that astronauts eat in space such as powdered soup. She also told us that chefs make food for astronauts which are put into tins. In this way, astronauts can still enjoy their favourite foods.
Niamh spoke about gravity. She told us that in space, if an astronaut cried, their tears wouldn't fall because of the lack of gravity. She told us that you would be lighter on Mars than on Earth but you would be heavier in Jupiter than on Earth. She also showed us a video of a rocket launching up to space which we really enjoyed!
Niamh spoke about her journey to Antartica. She showed us videos of penguins which we thought were really cute.
We were reminded to consider how much water we waste every day. Niamh reminded us that we should remember to turn off the tap when brushing our teeth.
We really enjoyed the talk today. Niamh brought a powerful message to everyone- to dream BIG! We look forward to Dr. Niamh Shaw visiting us again in the future!
